Community Life

The Museum's galleries have been transformed with fascinating displays depicting Chelmsford's community life and showing how people spent both their work and leisure time.

In the downstairs galleries you can now find out about the history of Chelmsford's schools, its shops, hospitals, churches, prisons, public houses and people. There is also a reconstructed Victorian kitchen with a display of items used for cooking, cleaning, washing and ironing from the 19th Century.

You can find out what happened in Chelmsford during the Second World War and see a model of Chelmsford factories made by the Luftwaffe to assist their pilots in bombing the town.

You can try out the People Finder database and discover that footballer Geoff Hurst went to school in Chelmsford, spot a man on a book, a militant suffragette and a strange pair of scissors.

In the upstairs gallery there are new displays to celebrate the later history of Chelmsford.  With information about sports, festivals and music you can watch videos and listen to the voices of Chelmsford people telling tales of how they have spent their leisure time. There's also dressing up for the children! Image depicting Domestic Life exhibition
