As one of his final duties in office as Mayor of Chelmsford, Councillor Tom Willis presented his chosen charities, Chelmsford Samaritans and Chelmsford Mencap, with a cheque for £8,000 each - and that was just for the money collected so far. 12 May 2009
At a small reception in the Mayor's parlour, representatives of the Mayor's chosen charities were delighted to accept the two cheques and thanked the Mayor and Mayoress, and the Deputy Mayor and Mayoress, for all their hard work and contributions. Councillor Willis was delighted with the running total of £16,000 – a figure which is set to rise further upon receipt of expected donations, commenting: "The generosity of the all the individuals and businesses who have contributed to these very special causes is even more appreciated, particularly given the current economic climate." In thanking the Mayor for the funds raised during his year of office, Peter Turrell, President of Chelmsford Mencap, commented: "The money raised will make a tremendous difference to both charities and enable them to do things they might not have been able to do." Councillor Willis' tenure as Mayor of Chelmsford comes to an end on Wednesday 13 May when Councillor Tony Sach will take over as the First Citizen of the Borough at a ceremony during this week's Full Council meeting.
