Chelmsford Borough Council's Riverside Ice and Leisure Centre will once again be running its successful annual Disability Sports and Arts Day, on Saturday 9 May between 11am and 6pm. 5 May 2009
The event will give those with disabilities, and their family and friends, the opportunity to take part in a wide range of exciting sports activities including trampolining and boccia. For the more creative, there will also be the chance to take part in a range of fun arts sessions. Participants can also pick up an information pack on the day, which includes useful contact details for local disability groups. Now in its seventh year, this event has previously attracted over 200 people of varying ages and disabilities, travelling from as far away as Romford, Clacton, Harwich and Suffolk to take part in the fun, and it is hoped that this year's event will prove to be just as popular. Chelmsford Borough Council's Cabinet Member for Leisure and Culture, Councillor Ray Ride, said: "Events such as this encourage people with disabilities to take part in a wide range of activities that they may not have otherwise considered trying. It also enables us to provide information on the extensive range of sessions that we have available for people with disabilities that they may have been unaware of. Feedback we have already received indicates that this is a very unique event, and we are pleased to be able to continue running the day as it is highly beneficial to the local community." To promote the importance of providing leisure for all ages and the Council's Inclusive Fitness Initiative (IFI), the Disability Sports and Arts Day will also see the launch of the Centre's first ever 'IFI Week'. IFI Week will run from Monday 11 to Sunday 17 May 2009 and any green card holders wishing to join the Excel gym will receive a free induction (normal cost £26).
